TheIf you’ve ever dreamed of exploring the American Southwest in style, the Rocky Mountaineer’s Rockies to the Red Rocks route offers an unforgettable way to do it. It’s the rail line’s only U.S. journey, traveling between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah with an overnight stop in charming Glenwood Springs.
Mary and I had the chance to experience this route firsthand, and it’s one of those trips that makes you slow down, look out the window, and realize you’re part of something special. From welcome mimosas on the platform to the golden light on Moab’s cliffs, every moment felt curated to perfection.
The Journey
This two-day adventure blends Rocky Mountaineer’s signature luxury with the dramatic landscapes of the Southwest. Leaving Denver, you’ll watch the scenery shift from green plains and towering Rockies to rugged canyons carved by the Colorado River.
By late afternoon, you arrive in Glenwood Springs — a historic mountain town with natural hot springs, cozy architecture, and plenty of local dining. Our night there felt like stepping back in time, and we made a mental note to return for a longer visit.
On Day Two, the lush valleys give way to red rock country. Mile after mile of canyons, arches, and sandstone cliffs pass by, each more striking than the last. Arriving in Moab feels like landing on another planet — one made for exploration.
Moab and Beyond
Moab is known as the adventure capital of Utah and serves as the gateway to the Mighty 5 National Parks. Arches National Park, just ten minutes from town, offers over 2,000 natural stone archways, dramatic balanced rocks, and endless desert trails. We highly recommend timing a visit for sunset — the rocks almost glow.
If you’re up for more exploration, you can add on activities like guided jeep tours, scenic flights, or hiking trips through nearby Canyonlands National Park.
Paul’s Tip: Arrive in Denver a day early to explore Union Station and the nearby LoDo district. In Moab, plan at least one extra day — sunrise at Delicate Arch is worth the early wake-up.
