One of the most common questions I get as a travel advisor is, “How do you get paid?” And hey, it’s a fair question! Planning travel might seem like a dream job (and it often is), but there’s a real business behind the magic. So let’s pull back the curtain and break it all down—with a few laughs along the way.
Commissions: The Classic Model
Travel advisors earn most of our income through commissions paid by vendors—think cruise lines, hotels, resorts, and tour operators. It’s like being a travel matchmaker: I connect you with the perfect vacation, and the vendor says, “Thanks for the referral!” and sends a commission my way.
Important note: airlines don’t usually pay commissions, which is why I focus on the fun stuff—beautiful resorts, immersive tours, and unforgettable cruises. Because no one wants to spend hours planning a vacation just to get stuck on a layover with $19 airport nachos.
Fees: Some Do, I Don’t
Many advisors charge service fees for their time and expertise. And honestly, it’s well-earned! That planning, research, and personalized attention takes work.
But here’s the good news: I don’t charge any planning fees. That means you get expert travel planning at no extra cost to you. I want you to spend your money on souvenirs and sunset cocktails, not “consultation” charges.
Overrides: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Some agencies and advisors qualify for override commissions, which are extra bonuses based on total bookings. It’s kind of like a group reward—when a network of advisors (like mine) performs well, we all benefit a little more.
This doesn’t affect the price of your trip at all, but it does mean your advisor is part of a larger team of travel pros working hard to match clients with the best experiences.
MLMs: Not My Style
Let’s clear something up: I’m not part of a multi-level marketing (MLM) program.
That means I don’t earn money by recruiting people to sell travel or products under me. I’m not here to build a “downline” or hand out business cards at brunch. I’m here to plan your dream trip, not to rope you or your friends into a pyramid scheme disguised as a vacation club.
Affiliate Marketing: The Honest Version
Some travel advisors use affiliate links to recommend travel gear and earn a small commission if someone buys. I occasionally share links to things I genuinely believe will enhance your trip—like a great carry-on bag or reef-safe sunscreen—only because clients ask for my recommendations.
But don’t worry—I’m not turning your vacation emails into an infomercial. No “miracle travel socks” or pressure to buy glow-in-the-dark packing cubes. Just honest advice for smoother travels.
So… How Do I Get Paid?
Here’s the quick recap:
- Commissions from vendors (cruises, resorts, tours—not airlines)
- Overrides from my agency’s performance
- Zero service fees charged to you
- No MLMs, ever
- Occasionally a tiny affiliate commission for useful gear I truly recommend
And through it all, my #1 goal is to serve you, the traveler. I’m not here to sell you something you don’t need—I’m here to make travel easier, more enjoyable, and more magical.
