But before you start packing your flip-flops and sunscreen, there are a few important logistics that can make or break your trip.

Whether you’re heading across the U.S. or abroad, these simple steps can save you from last-minute headaches and airport delays.

1. REAL ID: Required for U.S. Flights Starting May 7, 2025

If you’re flying domestically next year, this one’s a must.

Beginning May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights. If your driver’s license doesn’t have a star or other Real ID indicator, it’s time to upgrade.

The process varies by state, but it usually requires a quick visit to the DMV with a few key documents (like your birth certificate or passport and proof of address). Don’t put it off—DMV appointments can book up fast as the deadline approaches.

👉 Visit the TSA’s Real ID page for the latest info and requirements.

2. Passport Renewals: Check It Now, Not Later

Thinking about an international trip in 2025? Pull out your passport today.

Most countries require your passport to be valid at least six months beyond your return date. So even if yours expires later next year, you might run into trouble.

Renewal times are faster than they’ve been in years, and the U.S. State Department now offers online renewals for many travelers—no need to visit an office or send your passport by mail.

✅ Pro Tip: Double-check your kids’ passports, too. Child passports are only valid for five years (not ten like adult ones).

3. ETIAS: Europe’s New Entry Requirement in 2025

If Europe is on your radar for 2025, there’s a new step to add to your pre-trip checklist.

Starting in mid-2025, travelers from the U.S. and other visa-free countries will need to apply for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) before entering the Schengen Area (which includes most of Europe’s top destinations).

The application takes about 10 minutes, costs a small fee (around €7), and is valid for multiple trips over three years. You’ll need to apply online and receive approval before boarding your flight.

🌍 Full details will be available at europa.eu/etias once the system is live.

Plan Smart. Travel Confidently.
